Abstract

In the human body, blood glucose levels are tightly regulated by a myriad of mechanisms at different levels of organization: from the secretion of hormones at the cellular level in the pancreas, to their effects at the systemic level where they result in an increase or decrease of the blood glucose, as required. In this article, we describe the mechanisms involved, how they work and what happens when they fail.
