Abstract
Polybenzimidazoles (PBIs) are a class of high-performance polymers; their aromatic structure provides them with rigidity, high thermal stability and excellent chemical resistance. However, only a few PBIs have been explored in practice, due to their diffiffifficult processing. Among the derivatives of PBIs, poly (2,2’- (m-phenylene) -5,5’-dibenzimidazole)) offffers a combination of thermal stability and processability, making it the fifirst PBI available under the trade name Celazole ®. Initially it was used in the military industry and later its use expanded to the market of highperformance textile fifibers as protective clothing against fifire. However, its use is not limited to the textile industry, its most recent applications include fuel cells, gas separation membranes, coating materials for aircraft and spacecraft, etc. This paper presents a review focused on the synthesis, processing and main applications of PBIs.
