Procesos fisiológicos relacionados con el almacenamiento prolongado de espermatozoides en murcielagos hermbras
Abstract
The prolonged sperm storage is a strategy that some vertebrates (reptiles, amphibians, mammals) present. In mammals, this characteristic is almost completely reduced to vespertilionid bats and it is present in some chiropterans with a type of torpor, although it has also been reported in tropical species. When the females are inseminated, and the oocytes are not yet available in the oviducts, the sperm have to remain in the female reproductive tract for long periods of time. The utero-tubal junction is the universal storage site for sperm in most of vespertilionid bats, participating integrally in the storage of cells, providing “nutrients” for their survival. The objective of this review was to collect information about the mechanisms involved in maintaining the viability of sperm during their prolonged storage in the female reproductive tract of bats.
