Fármacos anticancerígenos: de la naturaleza a la práctica clínica
Keywords:
Vinblastine, vincristine, taxol, camptothecin
Abstract
Since there is no ideal cure for cancer of any type, this set of diseases is among the main causes of mortality around the world. However, the study of medicinal plants has played a transcendental role in its treatment, having led to the identification of bioactive molecules with new structures and mechanisms of action that provided the basis for the development of some important anticancer drugs widely used in combination with other chemotherapeutic agents. This article expounds on the history of the discovery of three compounds derived from natural products that led to anticancer drugs. They are the alkaloids of vinca, the taxanes, and the analogs of camptothecin.
