Abstract

Recently it has been reported in the literature what could be a new event of selection and adaptation in human, which counts as a selection factor exposure to inorganic arsenic, a highly toxic element that can be found naturally in bodies of water used for human consumption. The selection signals have been observed in populations settled in Argentina and Chile, which have been exposed to high concentrations of arsenic for thousands of years; among the components under selection is the geneAS3MT, which encodes an enzyme that participates in the biomethylation of arsenic, an important step in the metabolism and elimination of this toxic element of our organism. Several single nucleotide polymorphisms have been reported in this gene and sorne of them are associated with diff erences in the metabolism of arsenic and its toxicity.
