¿Son realmente las aguas residuales un desecho?
Abstract
This work aims to describe the water resources panorama in Mexico, emphasizing wastewater management as a sustainable alternative to solve water scarcity and overexploitation of watersheds. The information collected shows that the country is in an acute water crisis, derived from water overuse, receiving bodies pollution, and the low coverage of drinking water and basic sanitation services. Therefore, wastewater is used to irrigate crops without receiving any previous treatment, representing a serious risk to public health. As an alternative to the problem, this article explores reclaimed water reuse. Moreover, new concepts and solutions for wastewater treatment are described, seeking to reduce energy consumption and harmful chemical products, and valuable resources recovery, such as energy in the form of methane, nutrients that can be used as fertilizers, and other value-added products like bioplastics and exopolysaccharides.
