Abstract

The constant increment of global energy demand and the fight against climate change have created the need of turning our energy production systems towards renewable energies. Due to its many environmental advantages, one of the most attractive renewable energy sources is biogas. Obtained from the anaerobic decomposition of organic matter, biogas is a gas mixture composed mainly of methane (CH4 ) and carbon dioxide (CO2 ), its production allows the valorization of wastes and the reduction of fossil fuels burning, whilst generating nutrient-rich substrates with application in agriculture. This article aims gives an outlook on the biogas production process, its advantages and its relevance in the context of climate change.
