Abstract

Ion channels are ubiquitous membrane transport proteins key for a myriad of physiological processes involving both excitable and non-excitable cells. While the role of ion channels for the functional properties of excitable cells has been widely known for decades, the study of their involvement on the activity of non-excitable cells has been somewhat relegated. This is the case of immune cells, such as B and T lymphocytes, whose viability and regulation during a immune response heavily relies on the activity of ion channels. In this article, we provide a general overview of the importance of ion channels for the immune response, the experimental techniques used to study them, the cellular processes involved and how they become altered in pathological scenarios such as the nutritionally acquired immunodeficiency syndrome
