Abstract

We present a review of the main anatomic characteristics which define Mexican proboscideans (Mammoths, mastodonts and gomphotheres). Our goal is to have accessible and concrete information that help to recognize the three extinct families that lived in what now is our country: Elephantidae, Mammutidae and Gomphoteriidae, which are considered part of the megafauna that lived in the Pleistocene, ranged from 2.58-0.01 million years. Each group is differentiated by the form of the molars, tusks, and the size of their bodies. The causes of their extinction are still under debate and have generated research topics about the past diversity.
