Disposición final de cubrebocas durante la pandemia SARS-Cov-2 (COVID-19) y riesgo ambiental en la zona centro de Veracruz, México
Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on medical services worldwide, in addition to generating economic and social effects in all sectors. Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as face masks was the main strategy to try to reduce the number of COVID-19 infections. The face masks used by the general population in Mexico during the contingency, are mainly made of polyethylene and are single-use waste. In Mexico, these residues are not considered hazardous biological waste, however they require adequate management to avoid potential risks as a source of contagion for the general population and avoid a source of contamination due to the release of microplastics for terrestrial and aquatic biota. There are no official calculations on the volume of face masks used in Mexico, mechanisms and final disposal sites. Therefore, this represents a risk to public and environmental health that must be estimated in the comprehensive management of pandemic care.
