Abstract

After the 2017 earthquakes, the use of social media to disseminate information related to seismic activity was notorious, which is unreliable in all cases. A notorious case is the fact that earthquakes are classified as oscillatory and undulatory, which attempt to relate the direction of seismic wave propagation with structural damage to buildings. This paper discusses the propagation of seismic waves, their study, and their measurement to clarify that all earthquakes have horizontal and vertical components. Normative proposals that have tried to define them for seismic design purposes as a proportion of lateral forces are discussed.
