Abstract
Henry Stommel (1948) proposes the first mathematical model to explain the surface circulation of water in the North Atlantic Ocean, this model is characterized by its simplicity and elegance to develop its governing equation, which is considered in this work as an advantage and a window of opportunities for a first approach to physical oceanography for science and engineering students. Stommel uses the basic equations of fluid dynamics, the Coriolis effect and the efforts of the wind, hence so, the objective of this work is to present these physical principles in a detail way, as well as the mathematical concepts and tools to provide a pedagogical practice.
