Abstract

Since ancient times, polymers such as silk, cellulose, and tree resins have been of great importance in the various cultures of the world. Although they were not known as polymers, until 1926, the year in which H. Staudinger enunciated the paradigm that "Polymers are formed by long chains of small molecules joined by covalent bonds." From that year on, intense scientific activity began to synthesize new polymers, to measure their properties and identify their possible applications. Thus, in Medicine, they have been applied in the formulation of medicinal tablets (pills), as bone cements and drug vehicles to be gradually released in the human body, among many applications. Currently, they are being used to develop structures for cell growth in the manufacture of tissues that can replace part or all of a damaged organ of the human body.
