Abstract

Lignocellulosic biomass is the most abundant natural source around the world, from which a wide kind of chemicals of commercial interest can be produced. Acid hydrolysis is a chemical method commonly employed to transform lignocelluloses into value-add chemicals such as easily fermentable sugars; mainly glucose, xylose and arabinose, and cellulose derivatives by either single or complex processes. In this paper, a general description of acid hydrolysis technology as conventional pretreatment method or as direct technique to produce monomeric sugars, as well as its role on lignocelluloses revalorization, mathematical models and the main chemical compounds produced by acid hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass are presented and described.
