Abstract

Histone deacetylases (HDACs) are a group of enzymes that play a crucial role in regulating gene expression by modifying the structure of chromatin. They achieve this by removing acetyl groups from histone proteins, which are the proteins around which DNA is wrapped in the cell nucleus. This process is known as deacetylation. Their activity is tightly regulated, and their dysregulation can contribute to diseases, making them significant targets for therapeutic intervention.
