¿Cómo coexisten los depredadores en Chihuahua?
Keywords:
Carnivore community; feeding competition; trophic modularity; white-tailed deer
Abstract
Northwestern Chihuahua hosts five enigmatic predators that feed on the flesh of their prey to survive, though when the latter are scarce, they also take advantage of other resources such as plants and insects. Although at first glance predators share a great diversity of food items, interaction network analyses suggest that each predator may prefer certain prey combinations (modules), thus allowing Mexican wolves, coyotes, black bears, pumas and bobcats to coexist, maintaining the ecosystem balance. Community-based studies of carnivores may be key to their conservation in Mexico.
