Abstract
The discovery of morphine from Papaver somniferum represented a major contribution to the treatment of severe pain and prompted the development of other medications, both semi-synthetic and synthetic, that are capable of effectively controlling pain. However, its addictive potential has generated a major public health crisis. Such is the case with fentanyl, whose growing demand has led to its illegal synthesis, along with various analogues that cause an alarming number of deaths in overdoses. To address this problem, government intervention is not enough; active collaboration across multiple sectors of society is essential to regulate the use of painkillers and ensure that their use is limited to treatments under strict medical supervision.
