Harmful Effects on the Human Being Sleep Restriction
Abstract
Since the origin of life, the rhythms linked to the light-dark cycle have determined the characteristics of evolutionarily successful species. Just as the activity-rest cycle occurs widely in nature, even in plants, the sleep-wake cycle is widely distributed in mammals. The human being depends on his sleep-wake cycle being properly carried out every day in order to live fully. At present, urban societies have underestimated the importance of sleep and problems related to sleep restriction are beginning to be observed that put the quality of life of human beings at risk. This chapter reports on some of the already consolidated observations about the harmful effects of short, medium and long-term sleep restriction. It is presented as an epidemic of urgent attention because otherwise public health will soon be overtaken by the emergence of pathologies associated with sleep restriction.
