Sleeping or not sleeping ... is not a dilemma: Lack of sleep is the cause of obesity and diabetes

Abstract

In recent years, evidences have been accumulated showing that sleep loss induces obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, glucose intolerance and / or insulin resistance. Sorne studies have mentioned that the lack of sleep causes the subjects to have a greater opportunity to eat, and that is the reason why these metabolic problems are caused. However, this text shows evidence, including from our lab, that sleep loss modifies the metabolism without correlation with a higher food intake. Rodents that were sleep restricted for 6 weeks showed glucose intolerance since the first week of sleep loss, however, an increase in food intake or changes in insulin concentration was not observed. The lack of sleep is a cause of obesity and diabetes that has not been fully recognized in our country or for the World Health Organization, this omission must be recognized to make public health strategies to prevent jobs and activities that promote chronic sleep restriction.
